7 & 8 Animal sculpture Africa is full of animals. In the book Calabash Cat a cat tells animals, worldwide, about the Chadian Creation story. We will look at the animals in the book, each student will pick animals that they want to make & paint in clay.
2. Animal mask in colored paper We’ll pick a favorite animal and make its face into a mask, with a hook on the back, so it can hang on a wall.
1. Oil pastel animal drawing with a decorated frame We’ll draw an animal with oil pastels and mount our drawings on colored paper frames decorated with geometric designs.

1st grade - 5th grade • (8 class workshop)

In Africa Arts we’ll use the book Calabash Cat to study the geometric design, and the simplification & stylization of natural form characteristic of African art. The workshop will include photos and examples of African art, too. We will make animal sculptures in modeling clay, study geometric embellishment of form and make masks of African animals.

  1. The cost of each class is eighteen dollars ($18), plus a two dollar ($2) materials fee, for each student, for a total cost of twenty dollars ($20), per student, per class. So, the total cost of a four week workshop would be 20 x 4 for a total of $80 or 20 x 8 for a total of $160 for an eight week workshop.

Animals that fly in colored paper. We’ll make an bird and add patterns. Sticks makes this bird “fly”!
Paper collage We’ll study the geometric designs that embellish the images in the book Calabash Cat and use these designs to enliven images that we have cut out of colored construction paper, We will glue our decorated images on cardboard to make a paper collage.
4 & 5 Necklace with colorful beads and a pendant We’ll use an air drying modeling clay to make beads and pendants. In the next class, we will paint and string them to make a necklace. See examples of student necklaces.
